Do I need a queen excluder?

Queen excluders are used to keep the larger queen bee and her brood contained to one part of the hive, while the smaller worker bees continue to fill the remaining frames with honey. Because the queen is unable to lay young in the honeycombs beyond the excluder, the honey remains clear and light in colour. It can also make it easier to find the queen as she is kept within a confined area.

An excluder is not strictly necessary for honey production or harvesting, but many backyard beekeepers enjoy to benefits of using one.
